5. The stations

We will start speaking about the changes that a MAC (modify/add/change) admin would do. Most of the times the company implementing the system will put into effect all the local rules of dial plan, rules and permissions. Most of the changes that you will do will be station related. I mean how often does your telephony provider gives you a new numbering plan and how many times you will have to change a configuration for a specific phone ? Speaking of which...

Basically, the phones (or stations) can be categorized into 4 big categories
- Analog
- Digital
- VoIP
- Phantom lines (they ring but there are not phones actually attached to them)

Now, in Avaya each station has a station number and a password. Only VoIP phones require a password to login. All the other types (analog and digital) connect directly to a board and have the port number written in directly into the station.
We will begin the discussion with the 9640 phones (one of the advanced ones). We will take most of the settings on the Avaya cm but first we have to understand a few concepts that Avaya utilized in button programming.
First, you have to understand that in the analog world you had one line and one extension for each line. Not the case anymore with Avaya where a phone can have multiple lines. Basically, once the digital world came to life, this features started penetrating our households as well.
Put it this way. Ever heard of call-waiting 🙂 ? Well, it’s nothing more than your telephony implementation of multiple lines/extension. In this case the extension would be your x digits phone number. Basically, I am nothing more than a customer to my telephony provider that I’m given an extension the same way you would give an extension to your customers (probably not a 10digit extension anyway but you get the drift).

So, if you look on a 96xx phone you will see your extension once or multiple times on the main screen. For each appearance of your extension on your phone you will see a call-appr button programming on your main screen.
Now, before we dig even further into this, consider that a broad range of companies prefer to program on the main screen only call appearances and bridge appearance (will speak about them later in this module). Basically only the things that make your phone ring would be displayed on your main screen (this is the screen that you see once you press the phone button). Everything else that you program on the system would appear on the option screen (and you can reach this by pressing the right arrow key that you’ll see next to your ok button). Please keep in mind that a 96xx phone supports up to 24 button programming.
But enough theory and let’s get on with the interesting stuff . First, when it comes to Avaya CM Programming remember that you need to be in SAT in Tutty (see previous articles) or Avaya Site Administrator. Also remember ACDLR (add, change, display, list, remove). These 4 letters represent most of the commands that you will issue in the system. Please be aware that depending on your system (read permissions) you might not have all these commands available. However, with regards to stations here are some interesting commands that you can use

  • A – ADD station extension. Look in your DID list to see what extensions you have available. Also, you can issue add station next but I don’t recommend using it unless you’ve bought the whole DID range of digits. Also you can look into duplicate station if you have a template to follow.
  • C- CHANGE station extension
  • D- Display station extension. Will show you all the characteristics of a station
  • L – List station x count y. Useful when you want to see all the stations in a particular range. Eg: List station 7000 count 9 will display any stations programmed in the 7000-7009 interval. Guess what list station 7000 count 50 will do
  • R – Remove station extension. Please note that you will have to confirm the command with F3 or cancel with F1.
